Governor Update
Happy Holidays!
I'm happy to report that the recent chapter scientific meeting, Updates in Internal Medicine, was a success, thanks to the education committee and its chair, Michael Devita. The evaluations topic suggestions were reviewed carefully and we're well on the way to the creation of next year's meeting. Save the date, September 10th – 13th, 2020, at the Margaritaville Lake Resort in Osage Beach!
That said, the meeting has been held continuously at the Lake for many years. One (perhaps unfounded) rumor is that William Osler had a poster there during his training years. In our review of the attendance, we noted that there were not many attendees from our population centers in relation to the size of their membership. As a consequence, we recently sent out a questionnaire to try to gauge potential attendance in other venues. More to come on that.
Congratulations to our student and resident abstract competition winners listed below, as well as the winning Doctors Dilemma team from St. Louis University who will represent us in Los Angeles next April. The national meeting will be at the Los Angeles Convention Center April 23rd-25th, 2020. Start making plans to attend Internal Medicine 2020 in Los Angeles, April 23-25, 2020. This is a great meeting and a great time to see old friends and make new ones. The Missouri reception will be at El Cholo not far from the Convention Center on Friday, April 24 from 5:30 - 7:00 pm. Register early to get the best rooms and rates - https://annualmeeting.acponline.org/ .
Our early career physicians' poster competition attracted three entries in return for complimentary registration. We look forward to expanding on that next year.
Many thanks to our hospitalist committee chairman, Joe Boyer, for his yeoman work. The level of continuity should be exceptional, as his brother, Chris Boyer, is taking over. Direct your questions, concerns, and agenda items to him.
Our Health and Public Policy Committee has set a date for the Missouri ACP Chapter's next Advocacy Day: Wednesday February 26th, 2020. If you didn't get a chance to attend in 2019 consider coming this year! It really is a good thing to do, and the enthusiasm of our resident and student members is infectious. E-P Barrette and Steve Keithahn will lead the charge.
Our membership committee recently hosted a social event to spread the word about ACP at chairman Amber Deptola's home. There was good fellowship and a lively discussion about practice structures. Another event is scheduled for the St. Louis Zoo on May 31. Save the date and plan to bring a) the kids and b) one potential new member.
Congratulations to our new Missouri Governor Council Members, Drs. Kyle Moylan of St. Louis and Molly Uhlenhake of Kansas City.
Dr. Uhlenhake is a med-peds specialist and docent at UMKC.
Dr. Moylan is an internist and geriatrician with Esse Health based at St. Claire Hospital.
We look forward to working with these new Council members, and extend a big thank you to those who have served on the Council and those who continue to serve. The programs and efforts of Missouri ACP would not be possible without the dedication of these individuals.
2020 Advocacy Day
Missouri ACP is holding the third annual Advocacy Day on February 26, 2020, in Jefferson City. Attendees will have the unique opportunity to discuss health care policy issues with Missouri's lawmakers while at the same time raising visibility for our internal medicine specialty. This is also an opportunity for Missouri medical students, residents, and fellows to become involved in advocacy at an early stage in their careers.
Advocacy Day is free for all to attend, registration is required. Click here to learn more or to register.

Committee Updates
Education Committee
The Education Committee is actively planning the September 2020 Annual Meeting, which will be held at Margaritaville (Lake of the Ozarks). We are looking forward to an entertaining and informative conference, building on this year's experiences. We are extremely fortunate to work with talented and generous speakers and are grateful for the contributions of this year's new committee members.
The Committee is also currently reviewing potential locations for the meeting in 2022. Feedback from members about the Annual Meeting content, format, and future location has been greatly appreciated and remains crucial to the Education Committee's ability to provide the best possible conference.
Hospitalist Committee
The hospitalist committee is continuing to expand upon its mentorship program as well as working on arranging a Hospitalist Day hosted by University of Missouri. We also will be working on having a presence at the upcoming 2020 scientific meeting.
HPPC
The Health and Public Policy committee is planning for the next legislative session which begins in January 2020. Our legislative priorities, which were selected after input from the chapter, will remain the same for this coming session. They are Medicaid expansion, establishment of a state-wide prescription drug monitoring program, red flag gun laws, and distracted driving (AKA texting while driving).
The chapter is planning to host its third annual Advocacy Day on February 26, 2020. We are encouraging all to participate including medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. Please see the announcement above and consider registering.
Membership Committee
The membership committee hosted its first social event in St. Louis on December 8th. Many of our members attended and enjoyed food, drinks and great discussion with colleagues, as well as resident physicians. We look forward to our next social event in St. Louis on May 31st at the Zoo. Save the date - we'd love to see you and your families there!
Poster Committee
The poster contest at the annual meeting was very successful again this year! We had 100 posters from students and residents. This year we added an Early Career Physician category and were excited with our first entries. This is a great opportunity for physicians in ACP to showcase their work and report on interesting cases or innovative practices they have developed in their careers. The winners from the resident and student sessions will be attending the national meeting in Los Angeles in the Spring to represent the Missouri chapter!
We are making some adjustments to the poster competition for next year. We are still working through the details, but to increase participation from our programs throughout the state, we will have a portion of the posters available for distribution to each internal medicine residency program and then a portion of the posters will be available for at large acceptance through an abstract selection process. Be on the lookout for more details soon.
MU School of Medicine partners with Missouri Board of Healing Arts to collect physician workforce data
The Missouri Board of Healing Arts and the MU School of Medicine are collaborating to collect workforce data to better understand Missouri's physician workforce in Missouri. Physicians receive a link to the survey when completing their license renewal. The survey link is also available below. The portal to renew physician licenses is open until January 31, 2020.
The survey results will be used in conjunction with other health care workforce data to inform local and state policymakers, public and private health care providers, and health care workforce training programs to better meet Missourians' health care needs and to ensure the best possible outcomes for Missouri's population health.
“This project is a decade-long collaboration of the Missouri Healthcare Workforce Advisory Group to plan, develop and implement a system to collect data to benefit Missourians,” said Kathleen Quinn, PhD, associate dean for rural health. “We're monitoring trends and developing training programs to understand our state's distribution of health care professionals and meet the needs of local communities.”
